Source of Our Natural Salt

In the vast area of the Natural Park of Aires and Candeeiros in central Portugal, most of the rainwater seeps into the ground and eventually turns into underground streams. There are salt mines that lie beneath the subterranean limestone formation in the southern part of the Natural Park. The underground freshwater streams that flow through the salt mines turn into saltwater streams. One of the saltwater streams comes very close to the surface and flows to Salinas de Rio Maior. It is this saltwater stream that feeds all of the salt pans of Salinas. In such a long underground journey, rainwater is purified and transformed into pristine saltwater. The salinity of the saltwater is about seven times higher than that of the ocean This is the source of SpringSalt's whole natural salt. Innumerable  generations --over centuries-- have harvested whole natural salt from the same source.

Harvesting Our Natural Salt

The underground saltwater is channeled to the salt pans to start the natural salt production. The saltwater is transformed into salt crystals in the salt pans by exposure to the summer sun and wind: A completely natural process. The still-moist salt is manually collected from the pans and heaped in the form of pyramids on wooden platforms to dry completely. The dry crystal salt is then  moved to the nearby wooden warehouses for manual sorting, quality control, and packing. No processing, only harvesting.

Unlike sea salt that is likely to contain seawater pollutants, including microplastics, our natural salt comes from a pristine underground saltwater stream, deep under the Aires e Candeeiros Natural Park: No sea water pollutants.
