A Healthier Whole Natural Salt

Salt, sodium chloride (NaCl), is an indispensable substance, chemical compound, for survival and health, if it is consumed in its natural form. Extracted naturally, sodium chloride is not the only compound present in salt. Sea water or rock salt –the two sources of salt– contain many other minerals and trace elements (around 80).

Human body needs all such substances to function properly: Not only sodium chloride. Salt must be whole and unrefined for it to provide the body with vital nutrients. Absorption of one nutrient requires the presence of others. A review of the contents of blood (the plasma) reveals a remarkable similarity to those of sea water.

Refined salt is a denatured version of whole natural salt. Rock salt is industrially extracted and then refined to produce table salt that only contains sodium and chloride. All other essential trace minerals are removed as impurities. Iodine is added to refined salt to help the functioning of the thyroid gland. Furthermore, anti-caking agents (usually aluminum based) are added to refined salt to prevent it from clumping. Consequently, refined salt is devoid of many essential trace elements that contains some unhealthy additives.

Sea salt is produced from sea water without removing any of its components. Whole sea salt has the advantage of providing the body with other essential minerals. However, sea salt could only be as healthy as the sea water it is produced from. With today’s heavily polluted sea water, it is likely that whole sea salt contains harmful contaminants which make it less desirable.

A healthier alternative to sea salt is naturally produced whole salt from an underground saltwater stream (spring). The SpringSalt is obtained from a pristine underground saltwater stream in Rio Maior, Portugal. The source of the salt of the stream is a sea that dried about 200 million years ago, hidden deep underground ever since!
